A shopping cart is a program that allows you to sell things online, on your own website.
There are 2 main components to a shopping cart software which is the ‘Storefront’ which is what your customers see, and the ‘Admin Site’ which can also be called the backend, where you make all your changes for the Storefront.
Shopping cart software can be run on your own domain name and web hosting if you prefer (Licensed software). Some shopping cart software companies strictly offer ‘hosted’ solutions which means that the shopping cart software is run on their systems, which the shopping cart provider maintains. This method is preferred if you won’t be making changes requiring a lot of complex programming.
There are multitude of shopping cart software available on the web and can get difficult to sort though. My current solution is BigCommerce, which is easy and fast to set up and has ample potential to scale with your business. If you would like more info on BigCommerce, checkout the BigCommerce Shopping Cart Review site.
Shopping Cart software is sometimes called, e-commerce software, e-store, online retail software, storefront software, etc.
