Book Review: Strengths Finder 2.0

StrengthsFinder 2.0 is a book by Tom Rath and is an update to “Now Discover Your Strengths.”

StrengthsFinder 2.0 is a fast, easy read that’s based on years of Gallup research on human talent (strengths). Through the research conducted by the authors on human strengths, 34 ‘themes’ have been discovered. Although the author makes it clear that there are more themes to human talent, the 34 covered in Strengths Finder 2.0 covers the broadest range.

The main premise of the book can be described with a few direct quotes from the book:

“Overcoming deficits is an essential part of the fabric of our culture…Unfortunately, this is taking the path of most resistance.”

“When we’re able to put most of our energy into developing our natural talents, extraordinary room for growth exists.”

“You cannot be anything you want to be — but you can be a lot more of who you already are.”

Included with the Strengths Finder 2.0 book is a special one-time use only coupon code that allows you to take a detailed ‘Strengths Finder’ assessment that lasts about 30 minutes to complete and allows you to discover your top 5 strengths. Tip: Answer the questions as truthfully and accurately as possible to get the most out of the test.

Knowing your natural strengths/talents are highly valuable and will improve your productivity and work quality if you tightly integrate them into your business. The book also explains a formula for strengths as follows: Talent x Investment = Strength

An example of how I use my strengths: My strengths are Individualization, Empathy, Ideation, Relator and Intellection, so I tend to see how each person is unique in their own way and gauge their emotions quite well. Because my strengths include individualization and empathy, I can use my strength to empathize with the collective needs and wants of the customer base and apply it to the individual level by using my individualization strength.

I highly recommend the book to anyone, and more-so if you’re starting or currently running a business. It will give you the insight into yourself to help you understand your own talents and how to maximize them. Because efficiency and productivity are of paramount importance in business, understanding your best performance areas will be invaluable. I’ve already bought this book for all my friends and I find myself constantly recommending it!

    Aloha Tom, thanks for sharing your top 5.

    It’s been ten years plus since I took the assessment. Clifton was still alive then, and Marcus was with the company.

    The information was right on and wonderful at first blush. Then came the hard work. Carving out a role for myself that plays to my strengths has taken time – a looong time by some standards and I am still somewhat in a haze. One thing is clear though, as Buckingham puts it in one of his books: “Discover what you don’t like doing and stop doing it.”

    My problem was that I found myself vested in all the wrong areas; applying this great saying became a nightmare. In the end I had slow down first, enough to be able to make the turn. Its still hard, but I am seeing progress everyday.

    Would love to talk to you about it sometime, Mr. Relator. I am one 2.
